Today I welcome Bestselling Author Susan Neal and Director of the CIPA. She’s here to talk about her newest release. Eating God’s Food:A Kid’s Guide to Healthy Eating.

First off, tell us why you wrote Eat God’s Food: A Kid’s Guide to Healthy Eating?

I wanted to teach children at a young influential age the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods. Kids are smart. They can understand that when you strip the nutrients from food to extend its shelf-life, it no longer contains nutrients. God gave humans delicious food to help a child’s body grow and develop properly. I wanted kids to be able to recognize the difference between processed food (junk food) and wholesome food that God provided (vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, grains, and meat).

How does your activity book help kids want to eat better? 

Eat God’s Food explains each type of food that God provided: vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, grains, and meat. These are nutritious and delicious. In contrast, junk food does not help the body grow but could harm it. Being overweight can be caused by eating too much junk food. Food companies add salt, sugar, dyes and other harmful ingredients to food to get a person hooked so they buy more. One activity involves identifying unhealthy ingredients on food labels such as corn syrup, dextrose, and preservatives. I want to equip children with knowledge but through a fun, dynamic approach.

Nearly one in four children are overweight or suffer from obesity. It’s easier to influence children’s food and physical activity choices when they are young, before they form unhealthy habits. Fifty percent of Americans experience a chronic disease and 42 percent suffer from obesity. I am on a mission to change those statistics. My award-winning bestseller, 7 Steps to Get Off Sugar and Carbohydrates influenced adults positively. Now I want to educate children so they do not suffer from chronic diseases. Teaching kids early in their formative years to eat a healthy diet and limit caloric-rich sweets and processed foods is key to decreasing the childhood obesity epidemic.

Is there a way for parents to reinforce the things their kids learn in this book?

Yes, at the end of each food section a recipe is provided for the parent and child to cook together. This cooking activity enhances the parent-child bond and provides an opportunity for discussion about healthy food choices.

What type of activities are included in Eat God’s Food?

The activities will keep kids busy and engaged. Children will learn from:

  • Drawing vegetables
  • Identifying fruit colors
  • Counting the vegetables you have eaten (50+ listed)
  • Matching nuts, grains, and seeds with their pictures
  • Finding high-protein foods
  • Determining when seasonal fruits and vegetables ripen
  • Seeking and finding fruit
  • Identifying unhealthy items on a food label
